Train lovers ride rails to annual Thousand Islands model railroad show

The Thousand Islands Train Fair is sponsored by the Watertown Area Model Railroad Club

Young or old, historic or modern, makes no difference to lovers of all things railroad who flock to Clayton this weekend for the 30th annual Thousand Islands Train Fair at the Cerow Arena.

Amateurs, enthusiasts and seasoned collectors alike filled the arena floor Saturday at Clayton’s recreation center, where the event continues today. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. vendors sold model train sets and boxcars, houses and scenery, books, and even real vintage lanterns.

James and Carol Dawes’s long swath of tables sat in prime real estate — toward the center of the arena, but still near the entrance. They’ve been at it for years, and this is their eighth train fair. The couple even celebrated their 53rd marriage anniversary just the day before.

“The train fair is like our honeymoon,” said Mr. Dawes, joking about their new anniversary tradition.
