Model Railroader magazine celebrates 1000th issue

The first issue of Model Railroader was published in January 1934
On the right track! A popular magazine that got its start in Milwaukee in the 1930s may still be chugging along, but standing the test of time hasn’t been an easy task.

Editor Neil Besougloff and the staff at Kalmbach Publishing in Waukesha are celebrating a major milestone. The April 2017 issue of Model Railroader is the 1,000th edition.

"This is the kind of magazine people have been getting for decades," said Besougloff. "We constantly meet readers how have been reading our magazine for 10, 20, 30 years."

The publication offers "do it yourself" and "how to" advice for people building their own model train sets.

"It's a good past time. It's a healthy hobby, and it's fun," said Besougloff. "We want to show the different techniques, whether it be how to build a tree, how to get your track to work better, or get a realistic sky backdrop."

Staff members even laid out every issue end to end. A train of magazines stretched from one end of the building to the other. The look of Model Railroader has definitely changed over the more than eight decades. The very first issue was published in January 1934.
