Crosslake model railroad museum to celebrate 10th anniversary

The museum is operated by the Northern Minnesota Railroad Heritage Assocation
The train museum was founded under the name Northern Trackers. The club initially had 10 members and no facility. It was soon able to lease the facility it now operates in, and over the next few years club members built several layouts: O gauge, HO gauge and a layout for children to run.

The club changed its name to the Northern Minnesota Railroad Heritage Museum to identify the facility as a museum. The HO layout and model trains depict the train depots in the early 1900s in this area. The museum also displays photos from early 1900s related to mining and logging, as these industries used train services. New educational information is displayed every summer season.

To celebrate the anniversary, the walls are now covered with photos of current and past members, visitors and train club activities.

The members have erected a G gauge (Garden scale) layout outside the building showing a town square, several town buildings, a granite pit, water wheel and pond and several feet of trestle that bring the trains from 3 feet off the ground to ground level. This is still a work in progress. All layouts undergo changes and improvements periodically.

There are now over 40 members of the club. They all love to play with model trains and to build layouts and run the trains. The NMRHA recently extended its lease to December 2017. Club members are exploring ways to operate beyond that date so they can continue to offer this venue to tourists and local residents.

The museum is located at 35170 County Road 3, Crosslake. It is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and 3-6 p.m. Wednesdays.
