All aboard for National Lionel Train Day

December 5 marked the first-ever National Lionel Train Day
It took 115 years, but it’s finally time to celebrate Lionel trains.

Dec. 5 marks the first-ever National Lionel Train Day, with more than 140 hobby shops and toy stores across the country, including the one at Lionel train headquarters in Concord, celebrating with elaborate train layouts, hands-on activities, giveaways and pictures with Santa.

“We created National Lionel Train Day in honor of our 115th anniversary, which is this year,” said Howard Hitchcock, president of Lionel trains, who announced that the new annual holiday would be the first Saturday in December from here on out.

Model trains are a hobby for generations of children and adults, in part because of the innovation they represent. When Lionel introduced its first locomotive in 1900, the public was in awe of the little engine that could harness enough electricity to circle the tracks in their own homes.

Advances came in steady measures, and were celebrated by eager train enthusiasts each time
