All aboard for a model train trip back in time

An impressive model railroad returns to St. Jacobs, Ontario, Canada
Inside a room in the town of St. Jacobs is a little world frozen in time.

Cows mill in pastures and farmers build barns. City folk stand on street corners chatting as a train rushes by.

The frozen world is a large, 3,000-square-foot hand-built model railway display.

It returned to downtown St. Jacobs after decades as a model railroad display at an Aberfoyle flea market.

"It depicts the way life was in southwestern Ontario in the late '50s," said Mike Craig, the executive director of the St. Jacobs and Aberfoyle Model Railway.

The large model railroad display was broken into 51 pieces and then put back together in its new home in the parking lot at 1440 King St. N.

Model railway hobbyists began handcrafting the little pieces of sprawling farmland and city blocks in 1972.

There are even people sitting inside the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railway model trains that weave through the scene on hand-lain tracks.
