All aboard at the Cape Cod Model Railroad Club and Museum

The model railroad club is currently building a layout in a vintage passenger train car

When train service came to Cape Cod in the 1850s, it transformed the area, essentially launching tourism and making local train stations central to the communities they served. Whenever a new train made an inaugural run to the Cape, residents streamed out to see it.

While they don’t expect that powerful a reaction, organizers of the Cape Cod Model Railroad Club and Museum hope to create excitement around the attraction they are building in a historic railroad car at the West Barnstable station. The 1905 railroad car, originally a stable car and later a baggage car for the Old Colony Railroad, is home to a model train layout under construction by a group of about 18 youngsters ranging in age from 4 to 18 and led by a West Barnstable dad who’s enjoying a revival of his boyhood hobby.
